SEN Teaching Assistant – Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)

Immediate / October 2020 Start – Full or Part Time 

Barking and Dagenham

Supply Desk are pleased to be helping a mainstream primary school located in Barking and Dagenham in their search for a teaching assistant on a 1:1 basis to support a child with severe learning difficulties.  They are active in the community and encourage families involvement within school life. They are extremely supportive of their staff and provide regular CPD and opportunities for team building.

Essential Requirements for a SEN Teaching Assistant – 1:1 – Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD):

  • Providing a calm and nurturing approach
  • Previous experience of working with children or in a profession with transferrable skills such as care
  • The ability to adapt resources to ensure lessons are inclusive as the child has severe learning difficulties (SLD)
  • Be able to provide lots of sensory experiences inside and outside of the classroom
  • The ability to work as a team with the class teacher and another TA to ensure progress is monitored and planned for


  • NVQ in Childcare and Education Or Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Previous experience of using Makaton/ PECS or Makaton/ PECS trained
  • Experience of severe learning difficulties or physical disability
  • Peg feeding or epilepsy training
