Supply teacher essentials
- Arrive on time. Super supply teachers are on time – but on the rare, unavoidable occasion when they know they will be late, they let us know so we can inform our clients. The earlier you can get to an unfamiliar school, the more time you have to familiarise yourselves with the school layout (ask for a map), the behaviour policy, and to see whether resources have been left for you or whether you need to organise your own.
- Pack a Super Supply Kit with all the things they might need for the day.
- Make themselves familiar with school guidelines, discipline procedures and relevant policies.
- Long term supply teachers: assume the role of a full-time member of staff, completing all planning, preparation, assessment and daily duties.
- Dress professionally. You might get a phone call at 8am for a job that starts at 8:45. Make sure you’ve always got a professional, clean, ironed work outfit ready to go. Clothing really does set a student’s impression of you, so make sure your clothing sends the right message.
In the classroom
- Write your name on the board before students enter, as well as any lesson objectives that may have been left by the teacher.
- Identify whether there are any class rules posted.
- Read through the register and check the pronunciation of any names you are unsure of. Ask for a seating chart if one exists.
- When the bell rings, greet students at the door.
- Be very clear in your cues to start, and in how you manage transitions, explicitly explaining these (and your expectations of behaviour) at the start of the lesson.
- Students will be excited at a disruption to the norm, so get them engaged in a starter activity before taking the register, this will help to settle them. See our tips for painless attendance taking here.
- Follow lesson plans where they have been set. As a back up plan if nothing is left for you, be sure to have pre-prepared, appropriate resources at your fingertips, that you can utilise where required.
- Leave handover notes for the regular class teacher with a brief explanation of the day’s teaching, and list any content not covered.
- Ensure the classroom is tidy before the end of the day.
