‘School-led’ Tutoring: Guidance Make an Enquiry
‘School-led’ Tutoring is designed to close gaps in learning that occurred due to Covid-19. Schools now have the opportunity to identify their priority focus for closing the gap for their pupils this academic year and utilise a ring-fenced grant from the DfE designed to support the provision of school-led tutoring.
This is a new route introduced as part of the NTP. The funding can only be used on ‘School-Led’ Tutoring and not doubled up or spent on NTP tuition partners.
Supply Desk currently has over 2,000 fully vetted Tutors, as well as quality TAs, Teachers, and other Support Staff who are available to provide a wide range of tuition services including the 10-week reading intervention programme. It has been proven to boost reading ages by 2 years in just 10 weeks and comes with a Pupil Progress Guarantee.
What is the ‘School-led’ Tutoring grant?
The grant has been established to support disadvantaged pupils in catch-up learning and close the gap after long periods of lockdown over the last eighteen months.
- Schools have the opportunity to select the pupils in need of support. This could focus on providing tuition to pupils eligible for pupil premium but can also include pupils with other types of disadvantage or additional needs.
- The fact that schools will be able to use the funding as they see fit and can benefit the most students offers real flexibility.
How much will schools receive?
- All state-funded schools and academies in England will receive £203 for 60% of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium from Year 1 – Year 11. For example, a school with £200 PP children will receive £24,360 (200 x 60% x £203)
- The grant will be calculated to cover 75% of the cost of locally sourced Tuition (based on an average cost) and the school will cover the remaining 25%. This will be in line with the number of Pupil Premium pupils on roll.
- The grant is there to cover the cost of staff needed to deliver the catch-up tuition. If internal staff are being paid to tutor, using the grant funds, this tuition must be in addition to their contracted hours and duties.
What happens if schools do not use their full grant?
- Schools don’t have to use the payment however if they don’t use it then the DfE will recover it as an overpayment. So schools need to use it, or lose it!
When will schools receive their first grant?
- The first grant was paid to schools at the end of September and many schools have started utilising their funding allocation.
- The second payment will be in December 2021 and the third in April 2022.
Who can deliver ‘School-led’ Tutoring?
- If schools would like to use internal staff, including TAs and ITT Trainees to deliver’ School-led’ Tutoring, they will need to complete online training. This training is expected to be available to complete in November.
- Agency staff can start straight away!
- Schools can use any supplier they wish, including those not currently employed by an NTP Tuition Partner.
- If a school chose to get support via NTP tuition partners the cost will be subsidised by 70%. If ‘School-led’ tutoring is the right solution for your school, you will be given a ring-fenced grant aimed to cover 75% of the cost.
