Cover Supervisor Jobs

Cover supervisors cover lessons for classroom teachers when they are absent due to workload.

The intention of placing cover supervisors in a classroom is so that the regular classroom teacher is able to maintain their required number of non-contact periods, in which they plan, mark student work, administrate and organise resources for future lessons.

cover supervisor jobs and trainingCover supervisors do not need to have a teaching qualification, instead they require strong classroom management skills. Cover supervisors don’t plan work, mark work, provide student feedback or set homework. Rather, they supervise students whilst they undertake work that has been set by the regular classroom teacher. Cover supervisors must be able to ensure all students within the class remain focused on the task at hand, managing classroom behaviour of a wide range of students and de-escalating any behavioural incidents if they arise. Cover supervisors must be able to ‘think on their feet’ in order to answer questions from students, and to provide extension activities for students who finish their allotted work earlier than a teacher may have planned for. Because of the flexibility required of the role, cover supervisors must be adaptable, diplomatic, and patient, and genuinely enjoy working around children and teenagers.

Whilst cover supervisors may not have any subject knowledge in the lessons they are supervising, increasingly schools are looking to employ cover supervisors with qualifications relevant to the subject being covered.
